2024 CHSJ Annual General Meeting & Reception
We had the CHSJ Annual General Meeting and Reception on March 1, 2024
in DINING & BAR TABLE 9 TOKYO on the 39th floor of Shinagawa Prince Hotel.
A total of 59 people attended the AGM/Reception. Before the event, some of them
participated in the tour of the hotel's entertainment facilities including an aquarium,
a movie theater, and golf/tennis/bowling centers.

2023 CHSJ Tokyo Chapter Autumn Event
CHSJ Tokyo Chapter held an Autumn Event on October 27, 2023 in WPÜ Shinjuku,
a combined hotel and student residence which opened in May.
The 30 participants enjoyed a hotel tour followed by dinner at this new venue that
inspires a diverse mix of culture and values.

Zinck's Night 2023 in Kansai
The world’s earliest Zinck’s Night in KANSAI /JAPAN was held in Kyoto.
This year, we chose a Thai-owned hotel, Dusit Thai Kyoto, as our celebration stage.
We enjoyed a usual Zinck’s Night after CORONA.
We recognized how lucky “as usual” is.

Early Summer Gathering in Kansai
We held the Kansai Chapter Early Summer Gathering on June 9th in Kyoto.
Actually, we enjoyed the first meeting in the post CORONA manner.
The post manner means no reception, no cash payment and no printed matter,
which minimize human contact.
We will not be back to normal as we used to.
Although CORONA has gone, our habits have changed.

2021 CHSJ Annual General Meeting & Reception
We held CHS Japan Annual General Meeting and Reception on November 11 at Palace Hotel Tokyo. Since the last meeting was in February 2020, before the coronavirus spread, 51 participants, alumni, their family and friends, enjoyed the time spent with people they had not seen in a while, and the delicious meal.

2020 CHSJ Annual General Meeting & New Year's Party
We held CHS Japan Annual General Meeting and New Year’s Party on February 13 and let me share some photos with you. 69 alumni and their family and friends enjoyed the new hotel, The Okura Tokyo, which just reopened last September after 4 years of renovation. Participants enjoyed not only the luxurious room at the top floor of the hotel but their great food made of specially selected ingredients.

We welcomed Ms. Meg Keilbach, Associate Dean of Alumni Affairs and Development at School of Hotel Administration, who was staying in Tokyo for the week, as our very special guest at the party. Many remembered seeing her at the 20th Asia Pacific Regional Meeting in Okinawa 5 years ago.
The venue, Hyatt Centric Ginza Tokyo, is a new hotel that opened in January, 2018 and the designer of the hotel, Mr. Yohei Akao. was also there to show us around the hotel.

CHS 90th anniversary by Tokyo Chapter
We celebrated CHS 90th anniversary at a brand new Indian restaurant operated by a Cornellian. The event was held on May 9, which was a bit earlier than the actual “birthday,” but 45 Hotelie and their family joined and enjoyed delicious Indian food. CHS has made a video in which alumni representing each region appeared, and we saw the video during the event!
Now we will look forward to the centennial event in 2028!

RE program field trip group
Daniel Quan, Robert C. Baker Professor in Real Estate, School of Hotel Administration, and his students in RE program visited Tokyo for a filed trip April 1- April 4, and CHSJ hosted a party at a restaurant Boomin Vinum to welcome them.
About 25 Cornell graduates gathered to welcome the field trip group consisting of Prof. Daniel Quan, assistant Ms. Erica Heim, and 14 RE program students and enjoyed dinner including delicious pork. Some Cornellian were very happy to see Prof. Quan saying that they took his classes and even have experiences of working with him at Cornell.
We are sure the students learned a lot about the real estate market in Japan and experienced Japanese culture!

Only 30 guests were allowed to attend this wonderful French dinner party at
The Cafe by Aman, Aman Tokyo which General Manager Marc Handl, also
Cornell Hotelie, had planned specially for us. The cafe is srrounded by green
bushes which makes you feel like you are in the forest. Guests enjoyed seeing

[CHSJ]Hospitality Talk & Dinner 2015
It was a really special event with the celebrity chef Hiroyuki Sakai. About 70 participants gathered at his French restaurant La Rochelle.
Interviewed by his son Mr. Shingo Sakai, MMH '08, he talked about his restaurant, business philosophy, etc. Some of the participants were also allowed to ask their questions during the session.
And the tasty and beautiful dishes, including colorful dessert, were delivered to table from one after another
during the sit-down dinner and some were taking photos with their smart phone. Some purchased the restaurant's original curry or pudding as a gift when they leave and surprisingly, a free gift of bottled coffee and a glass was given to all participants!

The 20th Annual CHS Asia Pacific Regional Meeting
in OkinawaThursday June 26- Sunday June 29, 2014
Thank you all attendees of the 20th CHS Okinawa meeting. It was such an
amazing experience that CHS VIPs of each region gathered in Okinawa to
update each other on what's happening around them. The unique food and
culture and beautiful ocean also helped make the gathering extremely

The Cornell Hotel Society Tokyo Chapter
Hospitality Management Seminar & Christmas Party 2013.
At this seminar Mr. Hoshino of Hoshino Resorts and Mr. Sawayanagi of Jones Lang LaSalle Japan spoke about "Omotenashi and business" in front of audience of 120 interested Cornellians and guests. Cornell Club of Japan members (and other Ivy Leaguers) are invited to a special screening of "A Sofa for a Samurai," hosted by the Harvard Club of Japan on Tuesday
April 22nd.
"A Sofa for a Samurai" is an entertaining and insightful 45 minute documentary film (in English and Swedish, with English subtitles) about the launch into the Japanese market a few years ago by global furnishings retailer Ikea. Sweden-based Ikea is well known for its innovations in store design, customer experience and employee empowerment, with worldwide sales of about 30 billion dollars and 120,000 employees. Swedish filmmaker Jon Thunqvist and his film editor Kristoffer Hamilton, both Tokyo residents, were granted full access to Ikea executives and staff including meetings with suppliers and customer research sessions and show us the entire process of planning, building, staffing and opening Ikea’s first superstore in Japan. The filmmakers have created a fast-paced yet comprehensive work that shows the opportunities and challenges of introducing into Japan business models successful elsewhere. After the screening of this recently released film, the filmmakers will take our questions.
The film will be shown at Shinsei Bank headquarters near Hibiya Park, on Tuesday April 22nd starting at 18:30. A buffet dinner will be provided. The admission fee is 7,000 yen. A cash bar will be available.

The Cornell Club of Japan takes great pleasure in inviting you to join us Thursday November 16, for a dinner with Dean Robert Swieringa of Cornell's Johnson School.
In the past, Dean Swieringa served as a member of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), Key policy-making organization for accounting issues in the United states. Dean Swieringa gained wide visibility and influence in the corporate community through his work with the group. Also he had served as a professor in the practice of accounting at the Yale School of Management, and as a member of the accounting faculty at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He has received numerous awards and honors in recognition of his scholarly and professional work. His research interests are in behavioral accounting and corporate financial reporting.
This is an opportunity for you to meet the dean, such an outstanding teacher and lecturer!

Cornell Alumni Ambassadors Abroad Network (CAAAN) interviews students in Japan applying to Cornell each year. This reception is to congratulate and send off those from Japan who have been accepted for admission to Cornell.
Regular members of the Cornell Club of Japan are encouraged to attend and meet these newest Cornellians.

Professor Bruce Ganem: Dinner Speech
May 23rd, 2006 / Miyako Hotel, Tokyo
Over 20 Cornellians joined Professor Bruce Ganem and his wife Beth (a Cornellian with degrees from both the Hotel School and ALS) in a private dining room in the Miyako Hotel Tokyo's Shisen restaurant for dinner.
After dinner, Professor Ganem spoke on Cornell's Entrepreneurship Program and how to commercialize bio-related technologies.
Professor Ganem teaches at both the College Arts & Sciences and the Johnson Graduate School of Management. Professor Ganem is a synthetic organic chemist by training, and has served as chairman of the Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology. His interests have recently expanded into the area of entrepreneurship and to the commercialization of scientific discoveries.
He currently teaches courses on entrepreneurship in chemical enterprise and also the business of biotechnology. He also co-founded a company that develops and commercializes new university-derived technologies as startup ventures.
Thanks to Cornellian John Banta, the managing director of the Miyako, for his help in making this event a success.

Annual General Meeting

Mandarin Oriental Hotel Tokyo
100 members and their guests convened at the dramatic new Mandarin Oriental Hotel Tokyo in Nihonbashi for the joint Annual General Meeting of the Cornell Club of Japan and Cornell Hotel Society Japan Chapter.
The second dean of Cornell's Hotel School, Dr. Robert Beck '42, was guest of honor, and the Club was also very fortunate to have Professor Robert Gravani from the Hotel School join the event.
Many attendees enjoyed a tour of the hotel before the meeting began.
